NEW DELHI, Aug 5: The Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) has started looking at alternatives for the position of director of their upcoming academy after not getting a favourable response from former India coach Greg Chappell. The RCA intends to kick-start by October at Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Chappell, who besides being involved with the Brisbane-based Centre of Excellence of Cricket Australia has other business and cricketing interests, was asked to help set up the academy but RCA sources told TOI on Sunday, "it looks very remote that he will be with us, since we have not got clear answers from Chappell yet." That's why the Association has started looking at alternatives like another former India coach John Wright.
Coaches from England and South Africa are also being contacted. Whoever gets the job, one thing is sure that no Indian is being considered for it, interestingly.
The RCA is of the opinion that an Indian coach doesn't have the wherewithal to set up an academy. Hence the search for a 'big shot' from foreign shores who will be able to work full-time towards building the academy.
"The initial plan is to hire four to five NCA-trained coaches who will be working under the chief coach. Once they are trained then they can take over," said the source.
Apart from academy chief, the RCA is also looking to hire a new coach for their Ranji team. In the last Ranji season, Ajay Jadeja was leading as well as coaching the side before giving way to Level II coach Taposh Chatterjee, under whom the team surprised everybody by reaching the final of the Ranji one-day tournament.
Chatterjee, however, has been given organisational responsibility for the November 18 match between India and Pakistan at Jaipur and hence may not be coach, at least for this season.
In the meantime, the RCA has started to set up rooms for 60 trainees that they are planning to select for the academy.
