DURBAN, September 3: South African captain Graeme Smith has admitted that leaving out Jacques Kallis affected the "dynamics" of the team and the all-rounder would be sorely missed in the Twenty20 World Cup starting next week.
Smith said it would be "weird" not to have Kallis in the dressing room during the championships.
"His absence will certainly shift the team's normal dynamics," Smith said after conducting coaching clinics prior to the start of the Championships.
Smith said he had "a lot of respect" for Kallis's contribution to South African cricket and he would "definitely be missed."
Kallis was the vice-captain of the team but was overlooked for the Twenty20 Championship which angered the veteran and he threatened to quit international cricket.
The all-rounder is in talks with Cricket South Africa (CSA) CEO Gerald Majola about his future.
The two are expected to release a statement by next week. Smith also said that he was disappointed by all-rounder Andrew Hall's decision to leave the national team after being not selected from the Twenty20 squad.
"Hally has his reasons and it's for him to say what they are. He's always been a valuable performer for us when we've needed him. Perhaps he felt that he did not get a good run in the team. I will be speaking to him in the next day or two to find out," said Smith.
The skipper, however, felt the absence of two senior players would be an opportunity for youngsters to make their mark.
