MUMBAI: Ramesh Powar had bowled three overs of spin, relishing the rare moment of bowling on a greentop, getting bite and claiming one wicket. But selflessly, since he was the skipper, he took himself off and brought on the seamers who helped Tata Sports Sports rout Police for 72 in the first innings of the Times Shield A Division Group A tie at Police Gymkhana ground.
On Friday, it was a third-day pitch and Powar could have his fill. And he did, claiming six for 33 as Police crashed to 131 all out to lose the opening league tie by an innings and 131 runs. The only resistance came from Humayun Hirapure (31), who continued where he left off in the Kanga league where he came to the rescue with disciplined batting time and again.
This was the only outright win of the league. At Nerul, DY Patil led debutants Akbar Travels while at Mahalaxmi, Air India led Western Railway who made 251 chasing 346. In the second innings, ICL-return Dheeraj Jadhav scored 36 for Air India while Abhishek Kaushik hit a half-century for Western in their second innings.
