PANAJI: Goan cricket selectors will have to pick a new captain for the ensuing season after an inquiry committee found
Sagun Kamat guilty of assaulting a cricketer during a Premier League tie.
Shadab Jakati, should he remain fit, will be the obvious choice to lead the state cricket team. Jakati, who dons colours for Indian Premier League (IPL) side
Chennai Super Kings, has been in and out of the Ranji Trophy squad, thanks to the finger injury that sidelined him for long spells.
He has now regained full fitness.
"After what Sagun did during the Premier League tie, there was no way we could continue with him as captain. His behaviour is not acceptable," said a member of the inquiry committee.
The Goa Cricket Association not just stripped Kamat of the captaincy but also banned him for the first two first class matches for the 2013-14 season.
The GCA inquiry committee, chaired by vice-president Dr Shekhar Salkar, met at the GCA headquarters in Porvorim last week and gave its ruling, following the fracas that ensued during the lunch break of a Premier League tie between Dempo Cricket Club - captained by Kamat - and NRB-GSA.
Kamat is alleged to have assaulted Chari, who is a junior coach employed by the GCA, but was doing duty for GSA as a player.
The committee also felt that Chari was guilty, too.
"Chari, an employee of GCA, had not applied for leave from GCA and was guilty of misconduct and the committee felt that his pay for two days should be deducted from his salary and a composite fine of Rs 2500 be levied on him," the committee said in its report.
