KOLKATA: India's opening woes may get worse after
Sikhar Dhawan
was struck on his left thumb by a
Trent Boult delivery on Day 3 of the second Test at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday. The left-hander was later taken to a local hospital for X-ray.
"He was at the hospital for five minutes roughly. The X-ray report is yet to come. There is some doubt whether he will be able to take the field on Monday," a team source stated. The left-hander struggled during his knock of 17 off 32 balls in India's second innings on a pitch that yielded uneven bounce. New Zealand pacers Trent Boult and
Matt Henry, who came out firing on all cylinders, rattled Dhawan with the short one. Dhawan was struck on his left thumb when he went on the front foot to a short ball from Boult. He required medical attention in the middle, but resumed his innings.
Unfortunately, Dhawan was again struck by Boult in his next over.
KL Rahul is already out of the series with a hamstring injury. Should Dhawan not recover before the third Test,
Gautam Gambhir is likely to play in Indore.
