NEW DELHI: Here's a recap of the key moments from Day 1 of the first Test match between India and New Zealand at Green Park, Kanpur.
Pujara-Vijay hundred-run stand After India won the toss, KL Rahul and
Murali Vijay ensured that the team got off to a good start. The duo had little to worry about in the early goings with
Trent Boult and Neil Wagner failing to extract anything substantial from the track.
However, introduction of spin brought New Zealand immediate success with Rahul edging one to wicketkeeper BJ Watling.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Vijay then proceeded to steady the Indian innings. The duo took minimal risk yet managed a partnership of 63 runs in 20 overs in the first session.
Vijay was sure footed as ever and pounced on anything short scoring his 7th Test fifty. Pujara was uncharacteristically brisk and played with intent to take five boundaries en route to 62 off 109 balls. The duo combined for a 112-run stand.
Kohli falls to Wagner's short ballSantner provided New Zealand with yet another breakthrough when he removed Pujara, but the big wicket was scalped by pacer Neil Wagner. He had troubled Vijay with the short delivery in the first session and as soon as Kohli came on to bat, NZ skipper Kane Williamson brought Wagner back a certain plan. Wagner, coming over the wicket, banged one short that Kohli (9) got on top of and took a boundary wide of square leg. Wagner then went around the wicket, but the length remained unchanged. Kohli hooked the rising delivery but was cramped for room and the top edge was safely pouched by Ish Sodhi square of the wicket.
3 wickets for 21 runsDespite losing Kohli, India would not have been alarmed with a well set Murali Vijay and new man
Ajinkya Rahane in the middle. The NZ spinners were bowling well and strung together good deliveries to stifle India's run-scoring. Santner, bowling slower through the air got the ball to grip and turn. The trio started asking more questions and it was the Sodhi's turn to get himself on the wicket-taker's list when when Vijay, batting on 65, went on the back foot to a flatter delivery from Sodhi that he should have gone forward to, managing a feather touch while attempting a cut shot to the keeper. BJ Watling behind the stumps took another top notch catch and India found themselves at 185 for four in the last over before tea. New Zealand had fought back with three wickets for just 21 runs late in the session.
Mark Craig scalps Ajinkya Rahane After finishing a session strongly, it is always important to start a session well and that is exactly was NZ did. Mark Craig's strategy of tossing the ball up regularly paid off when Ajinkya Rahane failed to reach the pitch of the ball and edged one to short leg. With that wicket, India's top five were wiped out for 209 and New Zealand gave themselves a good chance to restrict India to a below par total.
Boult makes the most for the new ball Pacer spearhead Trent Boult failed to create any impact early in the day but with the new ball taken late in the day, Boult wiped out the lower-middle in no time. With the new ball taken, it did not take Boult to make his mark and he first castled Wriddhiman Saha for a duck and had Ashwin caught at slip for 40. He then proceeded to take his third wicket in the form of Mohammed Shami. India finished Day 1 at 291 for nine.
