NEW DELHI: Star players from the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) who were granted amnesty by the BCCI may now be auctioned for the third season of the IPL.
The proposal to auction these players, who are seeking a return to mainstream cricket, will be cleared after IPL commissioner Lalit Modi returns to India next month.
Sources suggested an auction of the known foreign players from the ICL - the likes of Shane Bond, Justin Kemp and Inzamam-ul Haq - was always on the cards.
But the proposal for an auction took deeper root after some of the team owners started quoting 'high prices' for even some of the domestic ICL recruits.
"If the proposal is cleared, there will be base prices for some of the known faces. IPL will also consider those names proposed by the team owners. But we can't take a call till the IPL commissioner returns," sources told TOI on Tuesday.
Prominent domestic players like Abhishek Junjunwala, Deep Dasgupta, Rohan Gavaskar, Hemang Badani, Dinesh Mongia and Ambabati Rayadu, who had all defected to the ICL, can now hope of bagging IPL contracts.
Sources also said that since almost all the franchises had filled their quota of 10 foreign players, the domestic cricketers would be more sought after. "Franchises know the teams with good domestic cricketers are going to excel," a team official pointed out.
Practice matches at KotlaTeam Delhi wants practice matches at the newly-laid Ferozeshah Kotla pitch, which is expected to be ready in the first week of September, before the Champions League. Even the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) is keen to host some practice matches before the Champions League stars.
"Some of our main cricketers will be busy playing Champions Trophy, but we would like to play some practice matches before Champions League with the rest of the players to see how the pitch behaves," a Team Delhi source said.
