If given a chance, I would like to do certain things differently. I wish I could have embraced the captaincy earlier.
I should have grasped it a bit earlier. In 1984-85, I was reluctant to take over captaincy since at that time I was just comfortable in my position as a player, cementing my place in the side.I would have been happy to be just one of the boys, going about my business.
But then Kim (Hughes) resigned and I was made the captain. I had seen what captaincy had done to him. So it made me reluctant as to what the future held for me as captain.
I was also a bit negative whether I was right for the job, whether I wanted to do it. I just drifted a bit too long, probably the best part of two years, and it reflected on the team. It took quite a while to grasp it, to get into it.
