NEW DELHI: Haryana Ranji player
Sandeep Singh, who played 15 first-class games, tragically lost his life in a freak accident in his hometown Mundhal on Thursday.
The 25-year-old wicketkeeper was preparing a football pitch for a local tournament when a tractor rolled over him. "The tractor skid as Sandeep was trying to help some of the youngsters to level a ground at noon.
He was such an open-hearted guy. I am devastated," Haryana Cricket Association president Anirudh Chaudhary said. He was alive when he reached the hospital but was subsequently pronounced dead due to excessive bleeding.
Sandeep's generosity and sense of responsibility were his standout virtues, according to coaches and teammates. "He always took care of people around him. He helped making grounds for youngsters in Himachal Pradesh and Haryana by providing soil from his agricultural fields. His family owned a pond which yielded black soil, which is good for preparing pitches. He used to provide them for free till he started charging a reasonable amount only a few years ago," said Haryana's coach
Ashwini Kumar, who has known Sandeep from his early days.
Sandeep lost his place to the consistent
Nitin Saini a few seasons ago and stayed with the team as a reserve wicketkeeper. He had also joined Services three years ago but quit after a brief stay, choosing instead to take care of his fields. "He could have got more chances to play for Services had he stuck with the job. Instead, he came back to help his family and the fields as his elder brother has a job in Delhi," Ashwini said.
