Experiences of injury plagued sports stars
International players are always fighting against injuries. Most of them owe a lot to trainers and physios for their longevity on the field. Some of them share their experiences:
1. Andrew Flintoff on English physio Kirk Russell: Sadly, I’ve been on the stretcher on more occasions than I’d have liked to. Thus, Russ knows a lot about my body. He has been a great help though I must admit that I haven’t been as cooperative as he’d have liked me to be.

My love for junk has often irked him no end but he’s still a darling and a great pro too.
2. Hashan Tillakaratne on Sri Lankan physio Alex Kontouri: It’s not often that a batsman can carry on with a pulled hamstring. But our physio Kontouri helped me not only stand out there in the middle but also get my maiden double century, against the West Indies. I was on 30 when I pulled it. But I went on and batted for over nine hours and it was all because of him.
3. Ramnaresh Sarwan on West Indian sports physio Ronald Rogers: I had a recurring groin problem some time back. No one could understand what exactly was it. I remember in Sri Lanka I was pretty low and trying to figure out why it kept coming back. Ultimately, Ronnie solved it. The problem was with my footwear. He advised me to change it and touch wood it’s been fine since then.
4. Virender Sehwag on former Indian trainer Le Roux: He had great understanding of our bodies. One of the changes in me is that I now know how to look after myself better. I was a bit out of shape sometime back which had a lot to do with my love for food. But now even when I’m at home there are some stricts dos and don’ts as to what I eat. Not surprisingly, I’m one of the fittest members of the team now.
