MUMBAI: The Emerging Players Tournament, featuring Twenty20 as well as 50-over games at Queensland in Australia from July 14, is a great chance for fringe players from the country to show their skills and capture the national selectors attention, feels India A coach Praveen Amre.
"The tournament is very important for our emerging players as its a long (international) season ahead (for the India team) and those who do well will be in the selectors focus," Amre said on Friday ahead of the teams departure for Australia.
"Because of its importance the Board (BCCI) is sending Dilip Vengsarkar (chief national selector) to accompany the team and watch the performance of the players," the former India middle-order batsman said.
The team would be led by Tamil Nadu batsman Subramaniam Badrinath with Uttar Pradeshs Suresh Raina, who has replaced original captain Parthiv Patel following the latters selection in the Indian Test squad for Sri Lanka, as his deputy.
Amre recalled that players who did very well in the previous three editions of the new concept by Cricket Australia went on to play for their countries.
"Players who did very well had gone on to the next level. Its a very important tournament for all the players representing Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and India," he said.
The list of emerging players who had progressed to their national squads since its inception in 2003 includes Indias Robin Uthappa (who represented Karnataka), Ben Hilfenhaus and Luke Ronchi (Australia), Ross Taylor, Peter Fulton and Hamish Marshall (New Zealand).
"Its a great chance to see which of the players can perform well under pressure. All the teams would be keen to win the tournament, especially Australia who have not won it in the last three editions," Amre said.
The coach felt that the near-month-long coaching camp it underwent in Bangalore had helped in the gelling process among the players. "Badrinath knows all the players after attending the camp from June 12-July 8. "Thats a good thing. Its also good to have Suresh (Raina) as vice-captain. His inclusion will be very important," he said.
Amre said the team will have to adopt a rotation policy as they play three Twenty20 and six 50-over games in a little under a fortnight. "We will be giving opportunity to every player," said Amre about the tournament which is to be held in six grounds in Queensland with the July 26 50-over final scheduled at the Allan Border Field.
Team: S Badrinath (C), Suresh Raina (VC), Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Manoj Tiwari, Abhishek Nayar, Virat Kohli, Amit Mishra, Pankaj Singh, Manpreet Gony, Siddharth Trivedi, Dhawal Kulkarni, Iqbal Abdulla, Ravinder Jadeja and Pinal Shah.
