NEW DELHI:: The unassuming, non-assertive demeanour of
Wriddhiman Saha hides the fighter in him. The skills and virtues of this 30 year-old wicketkeeper has found India's Test skipper
Virat Kohli publicly backing him for a long run.
But Saha stays practical despite being the first-choice replacement to
MS Dhoni for almost half a decade. "I still consider myself as a new comer. I need to perform to hold on to my place.
Those players who have performed consistently over a period of time, only they deserve to get a long rope," Saha said during a chat on Wednesday.
"I believe, I got a chance to play against South Africa because I scored some runs in the two Tests in Sri Lanka," he said. Few would doubt his abilities behind the stumps, but modern-day cricket usually requires a wicketkeeper to be more of a batsman first.
Saha, for one, has always believed that wicketkeeping was his primary job but the pressure of scoring runs while batting with the tail have been there on him too. "The pressure is there. But it's up to the individual how he reacts to it," Saha states.
