MELBOURNE: Fast bowler
Brett Geeves was on Monday named as backup for injured
Peter Siddle for Australia's third Test against the West Indies starting in Perth on Wednesday.
Tasmanian Geeves has been added as a stand by player and Cricket Australia's National Selection Panel said he will be released on Wednesday for state duties should he is not required to take part in the match.
"While the expectation is that Peter Siddle will be fit to take his place in the side, in order to ensure there is sufficient cover, a decision has been made to have Brett Geeves available as a standby player in Perth," NSP Chairman Andrew Hilditch said in a statement.
"Brett gets his opportunity on the back of his recent strong performances in Sheffield Shield cricket and because the NSP feel he will be well suited to the conditions at the WACA should an opportunity present itself."
Geeves will join the Australian squad in Perth this evening.
Australia are leading 1-0 in the three-match Test series.
