CHENNAI: Huma Akram, wife of former Pakistan cricket team captain
Wasim Akram, is battling for life in a city hospital after the air ambulance carrying her from Lahore to Singapore landed in Chennai for refuelling.
Hospital sources told TOI that Huma was suffering from sepsis (an inflammation of several tissues including blood), leading to kidney failure. She has been put on a ventilator and may need dialysis.
A seriously ill Huma was rushed to Apollo Hospitals soon after the aircraft landed at 2.30 pm for a 30-minute halt.
She was on her way to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for medical treatment.
An airport official said that Huma was reported to have been suffering from a brain disease. "She developed complications when the flight was refuelling. So they requested permission to disembark. It was granted," the official said. Huma was accompanied by Akram and another relative.
Airport doctors checked her inside the aircraft and immigration authorities granted Huma and her relatives a temporary landing permission. She was immediately shifted to Apollo on Greams Road.
While the hospital refused to make any official comment on her specific health condition, doctors said she had severe chest discomfort while being wheeled into the hospital. Senior cardiologists were attending to her and experts from different specialties including nephrology were called in. Her vital parameters were said to be "unstable."
