MUMBAI: South Africa vs Afghanistan: It is match-ups like these at an event like the World T20 that induces an air of indifference from fans. But, cricket being cricket, its history is replete with any number of instances where the mighty have eaten humble pie against weaker sides, and hence the romance associated with such encounters.
The Proteas, having stumbled to a stunning defeat, defending a huge 229-4, on Friday by a belligerent English side, have no choice but to make amends at the Wankhede Stadium against their opponents on Sunday afternoon.
And, they will be secure in the knowledge that they have an XI that can get their campaign back on track in a tournament whose format allows little room for error.
Given the quality of opposition, Afghanistan would have to be at their best and pray for a bit of luck so that their bowlers, who are generally seen bowling with a lot of heart, can create a few ripples on what is going to be a hot Mumbai day.
The two teams have met in a T20 on only one occasion when they clashed at the World T20 in Barbados (West Indies) in 2010. South Africa won that game comfortable by 59 runs, and they would be hoping for a similar result on Sunday.
Afghanistan, meanwhile, would be banking on skipper
Asghar Stanikzai to replicate the form he displayed against the Lankans, hitting 62 in 47 balls. Opener Mohammad Shahzad too has been in good form.
