What is the NBA G League?

The NBA G League, formerly known as the D League, is the NBA's minor league, with each team having an assigned affiliate to develop young players. This is beneficial when players need more development than the NBA team can provide during the season. The league was founded in 2001 and is currently led by Shareef Abdur-Rahim, a former All-Star player and No. 3 pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. The G League season opened on Friday, Nov. 8 and runs through the end of March.

After the regular season, the top 12 teams make the playoffs and play in a single-elimination tournament in April, where each round consists of one game per matchup except the finals, which is best-of-three. The G League comprises 31 teams, one for each NBA team, and the Mexico City Capitanes, an independent team that joined in 2021 from the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional in Mexico.

How much are the players paid in the NBA G League?

There are two ways that players in the G League will earn compensation. They can do it through two-way contracts with teams in the NBA, where they may split their time between the two teams, or regular NBA contracts where they may earn the full minimum salary to at least have a chance to get there.

Otherwise, they may sign standard contracts with the league rather than the teams, being paid without being committed to an organization of their team. Since 2022, players have received $40,500 for the season of six months while demonstrating flexibility and flexibility in the G League compensation toward players.

Players on two-way contracts can only be called up by their signed teams, similar to MLB's minor leagues. Teams can only sign three players on such contracts at a time. Standard G League players can sign with any NBA team, but must sign a new deal, as the standard contract only covers G League play. A "Call-Up" occurs when a G League player signs an NBA contract.
