Syracuse basketball hero Lawrence Moten passed away on Tuesday at the age of 53. Mike Waters of Syracuse was informed by his daughter, Lawrencia. From 1991 to 1995, Moten scored 3,334 points for Syracuse, setting the school's career scoring record. It is unknown how much money he is worth. But according to Basketball References, he earned at least $601,000 during his playing career. He also received $321,000 for playing with the Washington Wizards in 1997.

According to Syracuse sports, Lawrence Moten, the smooth-scoring guard who became Syracuse's all-time top scorer and made a lasting impression on collegiate basketball in the 1990s, passed away on Tuesday.

Moten's professional basketball career in the NBA was brief in comparison to most of the other college basketball players. Following his time with the Washington Wizards and the then-Vancouver Grizzlies in the NBA from 1995 until 1998, he went on to play professionally in Spain and Venezuela.

Later, Moten was appointed general manager of basketball at Digital Pioneers Academy, a public charter school in Washington, D.C. He carried on with his career in the CBA, ABA, and abroad in places like Venezuela and Spain. After formally retiring from playing in 2006, he focused on coaching and youth development. In 2014, he guided the Rochester Razorsharks to a Premier Basketball League title.




According to Matt Cohen of the Washington Post, his new position was supposed to help athletes connect with recruits and NIL chances. Using the nickname "Poetry in Moten," Moten spoke for Orange basketball from 1991 to 1995. In his career, he scored 2,334 points, and was Big East's leading scorer until 2020. His No. 21 jersey was retired by the Orange in 2018.

Even though they were suspended from the NCAA tournament for one year during Moten's playing days, the Orange advanced to three NCAA tournaments and won the 1992 Big East Tournament championship. By the time Moten earned his degree in early childhood education, he had become a basketball legend in Syracuse.

After his playing career, Moten worked with youth programs in Syracuse schools and as an assistant coach at Gallaudet, a Division III school for Deaf and hard of hearing students in Washington, D.C

Lawrence Moten, the former Syracuse star who was well-known across the country in basketball circles for his nickname "Poetry in Moten," died at the age of 53. He passed away at his Washington, D.C., home, according to Lawrencia, his daughter, who spoke to Syracuse.




The former Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said in a statement:

“This is a tragic day for the Syracuse basketball family.. Lawrence’s passing is such a sudden thing — it’s very hard to take. He was one of the most underrated college basketball players of all time. I believe some people took his ability for granted because he made it look so easy. Lawrence was one of our greatest players and one of the best in the history of the Big East Conference.”

Moten was reportedly discovered deceased on Tuesday afternoon at his Washington home. His cause of death has not yet been confirmed, although there have been no reports of foul play. Since June 2025, he has served as the head coach of the boys' and girls' teams at Digital Pioneers Academy, residing in Washington. Meanwhile, following the tragedy, his family members haven't said anything publicly as of yet.
