Top 5 NBA 2025 comeback stories after major injury setbacks- Victor Wembanyama, Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson and more
The first month of the NBA season is now over, but some clubs couldn't perform well due to injuries. Some of the injuries were short-termed, others were long-termed, and some will continue into the upcoming season. Fortunately, though, some of the league's best talents are prepared to make a powerful return. Due to their individual injuries, a few of these athletes were out for months.
Nevertheless, they are in good health now and prepared to play. While some worked hard to repair their bodies in the offseason, others took months to heal from severe injuries. Now, the focus is on certain athletes, like Jayson Tatum's motivational comeback, Victor Wembanyama's improved health, etc.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Victor Wembanyama made his comeback for the NBA Cup semifinals after missing over a month due to a calf issue. The Spurs will benefit greatly from that. After suffering a left calf strain in mid-November 2025, Wemby has been recovering for two to four weeks.
His calf recovery entails a cautious, multi-stage strategy that emphasizes strength training, progressive intensity drills, low-impact cardio, and avoiding an early return to prevent serious injuries like an Achilles tear. Before resuming full activity, he also effectively controlled the issue over a few weeks with reevaluations. He has since made a successful comeback after meticulous rehabilitation with the Spurs.
Jayson Tatum's phenomenal and super-fast progress in the treatment of his Achilles tendon injury became clear when he participated in basketball activities such as 1-on-1s long. The reason for this is the combination of advanced sports medicine and strenuous training focused on both power and flexibility.
So far, he is also making very early strides in his rehabilitation from the rupture of his right Achilles tendon. His methodical approach included practicing at the Celtics' Auerbach Centre for the most of the summer. He is now competing against the team's coaching staff one-on-one.
Throughout his career, Zion Williamson has suffered numerous lower body injuries, such as meniscus tears in his knee, a severe Jones fracture in his right foot, and recurrent strains to his hamstrings and groin. Despite times of dominance, the injuries are associated with his strong physique, explosive style, and biomechanics.
The team informed recently that the star forward had sustained a Grade 1 left hamstring injury in November, which kept him out of action for at least seven to ten days. After that time, the 25-year-old was reassessed. However, no formal return date has been established.
After suffering a serious injury to his left knee cartilage, Lonzo Ball underwent several surgeries. In March 2023, he underwent a rare meniscus and cartilage transplant, which kept him out of action for more than a year while he worked to become the first NBA player to return following such a procedure. He eventually made his comeback in the 2024–2025 season.
After a ground-breaking knee surgery, he eventually got to know the family of the young guy whose donor tissue allowed him to play basketball again. The transplant was intended to restore function and let him resume playing basketball. The problem was caused by previous meniscus tears, which resulted in cartilage deterioration due to increased joint pressure.
Ja Morant has experienced serious problems with his right shoulder, including a labral tear surgery that ended his season in early 2024. It was discovered that he had a labral tear and would miss the rest of the NBA season after he had a subluxation in his shoulder during a training session the next day.
In late 2024, he sustained a Grade 1 AC joint sprain, which prevented him from playing but did not necessitate surgery like the prior ailment. However, this episode demonstrated his susceptibility following his recovery from the serious injury. The injury happened during a game against the Pelicans after he collided with a screen. Although he had to wear a sling for a short while, the team deemed it mild in comparison to previous shoulder problems.
