Savannah James made a bold solo entrance at the 2025 Met Gala on May 5. With commanding attention sparked from her stunning fashion, she has created a buzz for her poise in the absence of her husband, NBA legend LeBron James. While LeBron was set to serve as an honorary co-chair for the prestigious fashion event, an unexpected injury kept him from attending. LeBron James, 40, took to X just hours before the Met Gala to share the disappointing news. “Unfortunately because of my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season I won’t be able to attend the Met Gala in NY tonight as so many people have been asking and congratulating me on!” he wrote. “Hate to miss an historical event! My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done! ��������✨✨✨.”


The injury in question — a Grade 2 MCL sprain — occurred during the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ Game 5 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 30, eliminating them from the playoffs. Despite finishing the game, LeBron’s injury requires a recovery window of three to five weeks, according to ESPN.


His injury setback comes at a crucial time in LeBron’s career. Following the Lakers' early playoff exit, he admitted he’s reflecting on his basketball future. “I don’t have an answer to that,” he told reporters. “Something I’ll sit down with my family, my wife and my support group and kind of just talk through it… I don’t know the answer to that right now, to be honest. So we’ll see.”

Despite her husband’s absence, Savannah James did not disappoint. The 38-year-old entrepreneur stepped out in a tailored burgundy Hanifa gown — a nod to the night’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme. Her pinstripe jacket with exposed boning and a full mermaid skirt turned heads, with fans and fashion critics alike praising her interpretation of the "Tailored for You" dress code.


Savannah’s presence carried additional weight since LeBron had been announced as an honorary co-chair back in October, joining a high-profile lineup that included Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, and Anna Wintour. The event’s exhibit, curated by Monica L. Miller, is based on her book Slaves to Fashion, which explores Black Dandyism and diasporic identity through style.

LeBron may have missed the carpet, but his admiration for Savannah was evident. On Instagram Stories, he shared a clip of her walking the red carpet, responding not with words, but with heart-eye emojis and brown hearts.
