The criticism for the Dallas Mavericks after the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade with the Los Angeles Lakers is still on the air. Recently, Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley gave his verdict on the work ethic of the standout NBA star who has been on a streak of claiming accolades to shine his resume. Before the Orlando Magic prepared to take on the Washington Wizards at Kia Center for NBA Sundays, head coach Mosley took a moment to reflect on his time with Doncic during their shared tenure in Dallas Mavericks.

During a pregame press conference, Jamahl Mosley was asked about Luka Doncic’s commitment to developing his skills when they worked together in Dallas. The 46-year-old coach, now focused on leading the Magic, painted a picture of a young player deeply invested in his craft.

“All I can remember when he first came got the league and us being there, it was a lot of nights spent in the gym, playing one-on-one with Dorian Finney-Smith and Dennis Smith Jr., of just playing basketball, playing ones, and getting after it, and getting the shot going,” Mosley recalled.

“My recollection of being with him, I constantly remember working, and him being able to work on a consistent basis, because he loves the game of basketball. And when you love the game of basketball, you work at it,” he added.

For context, before taking the helm in Orlando, Mosley was a key assistant for the Mavericks, working closely with the Slovenian star in his formative NBA years. His words show Doncic’s natural love for the game. While the superstar’s focus and conditioning have come under scrutiny in recent years, even from his former team, Mosley’s memories suggest that Doncic was not what his former team perceived.

However, when asked about Doncic’s current approach, Mosley made it clear that his focus is now on his own team. “As for the other stuff, I can’t speak on it, because I haven’t been there for four years. I’m just focused on what we are trying to accomplish,” he stated.

Since Mosley’s departure from Dallas in 2021, the Mavericks’ relationship with Doncic has evolved. On February 2, Dallas stunned the basketball world by trading Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster deal.

Doncic’s trade to the Lakers was certainly one of the most surprising events in recent times. Fans of the team came out to protest after the deal. Several fans were escorted out of the arena as general manager of the Dallas Mavericks Nico Harrison received death threats surrounding the incident. While the Mavericks defined their stance, Mosley’s comment propelled fans to think that the Mavericks are in a big deficit despite acquiring Anthony Davis.
