White, describing the moment “I was like this is crazy!” he said on The Young Man and The Three.,” was caught between his family plans and a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to compete on the Olympic stage. His wife, despite her plans for his birthday celebration, fully understood the magnitude of the moment and encouraged him to seize it.

Weighing the Opportunity with Family Support

Before giving a final answer, White had a conversation with Hannah to discuss what the chance could mean for his career. Reflecting on her reaction, White shared, ““We talked about it and she said I could go and so. Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I mean anytime you play in the Olympics it’s once in a lifetime but like the team that was going to be there just trying to embrace this moment, I was pretty excited” It was a pivotal decision, one that would alter his summer in ways he hadn’t expected. Joining Team USA: Making an International Impact

White isn’t new to international basketball—he previously played in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers at age 24, catching the eye of then-coach Jeff Van Gundy. This time around, he joined the elite ranks of a U.S. Olympic team coached by Steve Kerr. White’s defensive skills quickly stood out in the high-stakes Olympic competition. Kerr praised White’s game, saying, “Derrick White is a phenomenal basketball player. He’s a winner, he’s a FIBA player... Derrick is a champion, he’s a phenomenal basketball player and he’ll continue to make a huge impact for us.”

Alongside his Celtics teammate Jrue Holiday, White brought a defensive edge to the team, averaging 1.4 steals and a block per game. His focus and shot-blocking prowess added invaluable support to Team USA’s defense, contributing to the team’s high-energy play and ultimately helping secure the gold medal.

A Memorable Summer Trade-Off

Although White missed what could have been a memorable vacation, he fully embraced his Olympic role, transforming his summer into a career-defining experience. Playing with an all-star lineup and representing his country was a trade-off he’ll likely remember as a highlight of his career.
