NBA’s impact on US Presidential Election is greater than you think

NBA has a huge fanbase in the United States for which the promotion and endorsements or the public service announcements leave a mark among fans. November 5 of the year is one of the most important days that will decide the fate of the American people. Several athletes and sports personalities have voiced their political opinions and some of the NBA stars are no different. Ahead of the big day, the league has been making an impact in the political domain, and in one way or another, these stars have influenced voters spreading awareness about the right to vote.

As the 2024-25 NBA season gains traction, the league’s influence is stretching beyond the court and into politics, especially with the presidential election on November 5. The NBA has previously made its case for voicing social issues on numerous occasions and the league has continued to boost voter awareness and engagement. This season, NBA schedules, star endorsements, and policies are aligning to make an impact. The league even keeps Election Day free from games, further committing to civic involvement. Now, with a high-stakes election ahead it is fair to assume that the NBA’s role in the presidential election in 2024 will create a major impact.

NBA cleared its schedule for Election Day, encouraging everyone to focus on voting. The pause in the game has created an unusual break for the Washington Wizards as they finish a homestand against the Warriors on November 4. Now, the team has a break of five days. Several stars have endorsed their favorite candidate. NBA legend LeBron James has openly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris who is contesting against Republican Party’s Donald Trump.

Taking to X, the NFL star wrote, “What are we even talking about here?? When I think about my kids and my family and how they will grow up, the choice is clear to me. VOTE KAMALA HARRIS!!!” He also shared a video with a message.
Additionally, coach Steve Kerr has also been vocal about the right to vote awareness. His appearance at the Democratic National Convention this year alongside his trademark "night-night" gesture went viral which also elevated the cause.
LeBron James has taken a leading role in promoting voter turnout, especially in Black communities. His organization, More Than a Vote, has been key in mobilizing young and minority voters in past elections. Now, with WNBA star Nneka Ogwumike at the helm, the organization is staying focused on issues that matter to American voters this year.

Ahead of the election date, Houston Rockets’ Jeff Green has spoken about the impotence of voting in a video that was shared on the official NBA page on X. The star clearly emphasized that voting is important to serve the interests of different communities. He further asserted that one does not have to be a politician to be politically aware. “We are doing this part, using our platform, trying to, you know, embrace people who are less fortunate and give them better opportunities,” Green said in the video. “So you have to use your right to vote when come election days to figure out which best suits your expectation for whoever in the White House,” he added. Again, he concluded by saying that the people of America need to do their part for a change.
