NBA shakes up schedule after brutal winter storm forces multiple game postponements and time changes
Due to the severe winter storm that has created hazardous travel conditions throughout much of the United States, the NBA postponed two games on Sunday in Memphis and Milwaukee. Conditions prevented the Dallas Mavericks from flying to Milwaukee for their Sunday night game against the Bucks, despite two attempts.
A few hours before tipoff, the decision to postpone was made public. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain started to fall in the Memphis area early on Saturday morning and persisted into Sunday morning. Freezing rain has accumulated on trees and electricity wires south and east of Memphis, resulting in blocked highways and extensive outages.
The NBA announced today the rescheduling of two games that were postponed earlier this week due to bad weather in the Memphis and Dallas locations. In order to accommodate the rescheduling, two more scheduling adjustments were necessary.
Originally scheduled for Sunday, January 25, the Dallas Mavericks vs. Milwaukee Bucks game will now take place on Tuesday, March 31 at 7:00 PM local time and 8:00 PM ET. The Denver Nuggets vs. Memphis Grizzlies game, which was originally set for January 25, will now take place on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:00 PM local time and 8:00 PM ET.
The New York Knicks vs. Memphis Grizzlies game will now take place on Wednesday, April 1 instead of Wednesday, March 18, with the same start times of 7:00 PM local and 8:00 PM ET. Finally, the Dallas Mavericks vs Memphis Grizzlies contest, first planned for Wednesday, April 1, has been changed to Thursday, March 12, with a 7:00 PM local tip-off and 8:00 PM ET.
The league also modified the start timings for two games on Monday: Philadelphia 76ers at Charlotte Hornets will tip off at 3 p.m. ET instead of 7 p.m., and the Indiana Pacers at Atlanta Hawks at 1:30 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m.
Because of the refreeze produced by the wintry mix and extremely low temperatures, authorities had advised people to avoid the streets. Depending on the circumstances at Memphis International Airport, the Nuggets said they intended to depart at some point on Sunday. They will take on the Detroit Pistons at home on Tuesday.
Conditions prevented the Dallas Mavericks from flying to Milwaukee for their Sunday night game against the Bucks, despite their two attempts. A few hours before tipoff, the decision to postpone was made public. Shelters in the Milwaukee region received food that had been prepared for the game. On Monday, the Grizzlies will travel to Houston to play the Rockets.
In preparation for the storm, dozens of games were rescheduled earlier in the week. Separately, the NBA postponed a Warriors vs. Timberwolves game on Saturday in order to "prioritize the safety and security of the Minneapolis community" following a federal officer's deadly shooting of a man in a commercial district less than two miles from the Timberwolves' home arena.
Following the tragedy, players and Timberwolves coach Chris Finch addressed the team's grief and the community's fear. Many in the NBA community expressed their opinions following the death of the 37-year-old ICU nurse following his fatal confrontation with federal authorities in Minneapolis on Saturday.
