The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly considering a major offseason move to bolster their frontcourt by trading rookie Dalton Knecht for Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler. The potential deal, which could include an unprotected 2031 first-round pick, aims to address the Lakers’ need for a dominant big man to pair with Jaxson Hayes.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ frontcourt has been a weak spot this season, but the team has managed to stay competitive. However, with free agency approaching, the organization is exploring ways to strengthen its roster. Walker Kessler, a 23-year-old standout for the Jazz, has emerged as a prime target. Kessler is averaging a double-double this season with 11.6 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game while leading the NBA in field goal percentage at 72.7%.

“After the trade for Mark Williams fell through, the Lakers made a similar offer now to get another young franchise center,” Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz wrote. “Kessler, 23, is a massive presence in the middle who's averaging a double-double while swatting 2.4 shots a game and leading the NBA in field goal percentage.”

The proposed trade would send Knecht and a 2031 first-round pick to Utah in exchange for Walker Kessler. While the Jazz haven’t actively shopped Kessler, the Los Angeles Lakers’ offer could spark serious discussions. “Utah may not be shopping Kessler, although a future unprotected first and a good prospect in Knecht should at least start a conversation,” Swartz added.

Walker Kessler’s impact on the court has been undeniable. The 7-foot center has excelled as a starter, playing 30.4 minutes per game and showcasing his ability to dominate in the post, finish as a lob threat, and protect the rim. His skill set would provide the Lakers with a reliable and high-upside center to complement Hayes.

On the other hand, Dalton Knecht, a 32-year-old rookie, has shown promise with the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 14.3 points and shooting 39.3% from three as a starter. However, with the Lakers missing out on Mark Williams earlier this year, the team appears focused on securing a long-term solution at center.

The potential trade reflects the Los Angeles Lakers’ urgency to build a competitive roster around their core. Walker Kessler’s arrival could significantly elevate the team’s defensive and offensive capabilities, making this a move worth watching as the offseason unfolds.
