The Phoenix Suns entered the 2024-25 NBA season with championship hopes with a star-studded trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. However, things have not gone according to plan. NBA insider Shams Charania recently revealed that significant changes could be coming for the Suns, with Kevin Durant at the center of those discussions. According to Charania, the Suns and Durant are expected to work together on finding a trade destination if the team decides to move on from the former MVP.

“NBA Sources believe there will be real changes in Phoenix coming from the Suns from a roster standpoint. That likely starts with Kevin Durant,” Charania said on ESPN. When we look back to the trade deadline, if we remember, Kevin Durant was blindsided when he was involved in trade conversations,” he continued.

“But this offseason, from my understanding, Suns and Durant would work together on any potential trade to a contender in a trade scenario. I would expect 4 to 6 contending teams with some serious involved in Durant,” Charania added.

This revelation comes after Durant was reportedly blindsided by trade talks at the deadline. If the Suns fail to make a deep playoff run, a trade could be their best option to reconfigure the roster and gain financial flexibility.

When the Suns acquired Durant in a blockbuster trade with the Brooklyn Nets in 2023, the move was supposed to bring them into serious title contention. Instead, Phoenix has been mired in mediocrity. Currently hovering around the 11th seed in the Western Conference. They are far from the championship expectations.

Durant, despite being in his 17th season, remains one of the league’s most elite scorers. He’s averaging 26.7 points per game on an efficient 53.1% shooting, proving he still has plenty left in the tank. But his individual prowess is not enough to put the Suns into the playoff spotlight.

Frustrations have been evident. Durant recently made headlines for receiving a Flagrant 1 foul in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans, an indication that the mounting pressure and struggles in Phoenix may be taking a toll.

Several contending teams are expected to book Durant if the Suns move forward with the said trading. However, it remains to be seen if the trade goes through, adding another surprise to the NBA world.
