After losing several players for the season, including recent addition Jaren Jackson Jr., the Jazz have come under fire for their poor performance. Many fans therefore believed that the rumors that former All-Star Lauri Markkanen would be getting an MRI on his knees and ankles were a sign that another Jazz star would be cut.





With an 18-40 record this season, the Jazz are barely sweating. The Jazz were fined $500,000 earlier this month by the NBA for what NBA commissioner Adam Silver called "overt" tanking tactics, making them one of many teams in the league that are perceived as tanking.

Tony Jones of The Athletic first claimed on Wednesday that the NBA was sending independent medical professionals to Utah to confirm Markkanen's MRI results, but he later retracted that claim on Thursday. Jones clarified that while the NBA is routinely checking Markkanen's medical records, they are not sending physicians to Utah to examine the situation in further detail. Jones expressed regret for the mistake.

After veteran NBA writer Tony Jones disclosed that the NBA was sending a third-party physician to confirm Markkanen's test findings, these suspicions gained legitimacy. Reporters Andy Larsen and Chris Mannix disputed this on Friday after it was extensively publicized and compiled on Thursday. Jones quickly removed his first story and has since apologized.

Lauri Markkanen sidelined vs Pelicans as Jazz weigh draft position over late-season push

Markkanen will not play against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday night. In addition to his listed sickness, the 28-year-old Finnish player has a lot of obstacles to overcome before he can play again.

After the Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers, Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, and New Orleans Pelicans, the Jazz now hold the sixth-worst NBA record. In 42 games this season, Markkanen is averaging 26.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. On the court, he has been extremely productive and has the ability to impact the game on his own. His abilities may not be needed by Utah at this time, though, as the team cannot afford to lose its first-round pick to the defending NBA champs.
