LeBron James may not play another season, but if he does, age would have less impact on his play, as Mike Brown, who previously coached James, revealed the ultimate secret to his longevity. Surprisingly, it’s not his age. Of course, it is possible that he would hang up his basketball sneakers after this season, especially considering his recent gestures and comments. However, if James decides to play one more season, Brown believes, he would have the same energy as he does now.
James, for the most part, has been consistent this season. Still, if he opts for another season, it would be driven by his mindset, where age would just play a secondary role. Certainly, at 41, James is far more consistent than many young NBA stars, but as his contract with the Lakers is expiring, fans may not see him in the purple and gold. And as of now, it’s not clear if James would wish to wear another jersey.
Mike Brown details what keeps LeBron James at basketball’s highest level
Mike Brown coached LeBron James for five seasons in Cleveland and saw his evolution from prodigy to Finals leader. He described the defining trait that keeps James effective year after year.
“I feel like I’ve been around some great players... you knew he was special,” Brown told reporters. “Obviously, you had heard about him in high school, and then I coached against him the first two seasons, so I saw some of it.”
“But then being around him on a day-to-day basis, and man, just talking to him about different schemes and listening to him about how he feels and see things, you just knew he had a chance to be great. You could feel it.”
Brown added, “He’s just a talented player with a great feel. It doesn’t surprise me that he’s still playing.
“He can impact the game at both ends of the floor at an extremely high level. He can get going at any time. He’s still dangerous, in my opinion. So you just try and make him work as hard as you can and hope.”
Will LeBron James play with the Lakers for another season?
Uncertainty surrounds James’ future in Los Angeles. The Lakers’ long-term plans shifted after acquiring Luka Doncic in 2025, with the franchise increasingly focused on building around Doncic and Austin Reaves. James’ $52.6 million contract has become a complicated piece of that picture.
NBA insider Jake Fischer addressed the situation during a Bleacher Report livestream, saying:
“The Lakers are ready to move on from LeBron James, and I think LeBron James is ready to move on from the Lakers as well. The divorce is expected to happen in June.”
James has not offered clarity on the matter, but after a loss to the Knicks at MSG, he reflected on the reality of endings.
“At the end of the day, everything has to come to an end at some point. So, no matter what it is, it’s going to be like, ‘I’ll never play again in Madison Square Garden. I’ll never play again in certain arenas. I’ll never play again, period.’”
James further acknowledged the reality that every career reaches an endpoint. He noted that he will always miss basketball.
