When NBC announced that the NBA legend Michael Jordan would join its broadcast team as a “special contributor” to the big league, many fans were excited and curious. Jordan, widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time, has rarely appeared in front of the camera to discuss basketball since his retirement. Thus, his presence was expected to add a spark to the league’s analysis and to discuss the current players. The announcement led fans to believe that they might finally hear Jordan’s perspective on the modern NBA.

Even after his retirement from the NBA, Michael Jordan remains a strong personality in the big league. Beyond his playing career, which included six championships and five MVP awards, Jordan also owned a minority stake in the Charlotte Hornets, which he later sold in 2023, and his Jordan Brand's influence around the world. Fans believed that this new role at the NBC could bring a new set of discussions and commentaries. Instead, what audiences received is much smaller in terms than they had expected.

Why Michael Jordan’s NBA on NBC segment fall short of expectations?

Early in the 2025‑26 NBA season, NBC introduced a division called “MJ: Insights to Excellence”, a part of the NBA, where Michael Jordan would share his thoughts on the games being played. When the first episode aired, it consisted of Jordan sitting down with longtime broadcaster Mike Tirico for a long interview, which would be cut into shorter clips so that those could air throughout the season, giving viewers the chance to access Jordan's repeated opinions.


However, this interview has been the only recorded contribution Jordan has made so far, and NBC, on the other hand, has aired just a few short clips that have been cut from the same conversation. Instead of appearing in the studio, engaging in live discussions, Jordan’s role has been limited to this interview only, which has left many fans disappointed, as they expected more active discussions throughout the season. For some viewers, the segments have not delivered the depth or freshness hoped for. Many feel the same short clips are repeated again and again, showing up the same conversation and failing to produce anything new.

Mike Tirico explains the reality behind Michael Jordan’s limited NBC appearances

In a recent interview on the SI Media with Jimmy Traina podcast, Mike Tirico spoke about the expectations people have from the show and what they are getting in reality instead. Tirico admitted that the audience might not have received exactly what they had hoped for. Yet, he defended the value of having Jordan at all, especially given how rare it is to hear him speak publicly.


Mike Tirico explained that the original interview lasted nearly two hours, giving NBC enough content for them to share in smaller bits over time. He also shared that there are currently no plans for a new interview with Jordan. However, Tirico praised Jordan for trusting NBC with his busy time.
