Ja Morant, the star of the Memphis Grizzlies, had an outstanding game against the Charlotte Hornets, but it was his celebration that truly stole the spotlight. His symbolic grenade toss has everyone buzzing, sparking discussions that extend beyond the court. With a tumultuous past and the playoffs just around the corner, the stakes for Morant have never been higher.
Ja Morant’s celebration overshadows their victory
During a recent game versus the Charlotte Hornets, Ja Morant, the star guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, caused a stir with a new celebration. After nailing a three-pointer, he pretended to pull a pin and throw a grenade, a gesture that has raised eyebrows considering his previous encounters with firearms.
Morant put on a show with 28 points, eight assists, and five rebounds, leading the Grizzlies to a solid 124-100 win. Yet, it was his celebration after scoring that really got people talking. His actions have faced scrutiny, especially in light of his previous issues involving firearm imagery.
This incident is just one in a line of controversies linked to Morant. Earlier this month, he faced a $75,000 fine from the NBA for making finger-gun gestures during games against the Golden State Warriors and the Miami Heat. The league had previously cautioned him about such actions, pointing out their potential for negative interpretation. Nevertheless, Morant continued with the gestures, resulting in the large fine.
During his time on FanDuel TV's "Run It Back" show, former NBA star Chandler Parsons didn't hold back in criticizing Ja Morant's actions on the court., “It's ridiculous. You gotta grow up. Why are we talking about this? Your team is 4-0. You've been unbelievable. You've now been probably forgiven to a certain point.”
He later added, “What else has to happen for you, and your family and your friends, to learn? Make this about basketball, make this about your life, make this about your livelihood, and stop doing things like this because you're must-see TV on the court.”
Morant's track record with firearm incidents goes beyond just his actions during games. In 2023, he faced two suspensions totaling 33 games and lost roughly $8.3 million in salary because of situations where he flaunted real guns on social media. This has led to a complicated view of the young star, who has shown indifference to public criticism, mentioning that he's used to being seen as a "villain."
