In one of the strangest disciplinary reports of the 2025-26 NBA season, the league announced on Wednesday that Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes has been suspended for one game without pay.
The reason? Getting a little too physical with a mascot.
No joke: Lakers’ Jaxson Hayes suspended one game for shoving Wizards mascot
According to the NBA’s official release, the incident occurred during pre-game introductions on January 30, when the Lakers visited the Washington Wizards at Capital One Arena.
Hayes was cited for "pushing a Washington Wizards mascot" (the character known as G-Wiz) in a manner the league deemed excessive. While interactions between players and mascots are usually lighthearted, the NBA determined that Hayes crossed the line into physical aggression.
Video of the incident was not immediately broadcast during the game, but reports suggest the shove happened while the Wizards were taking the floor. The Lakers went on to win that game in a blowout, 142-111.
As a result of the suspension, Hayes will miss tonight’s primetime matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers at Crypto.com Arena.
The one-game check will cost Hayes a fraction of his salary but the bigger loss might be to the Lakers' depth chart tonight.
Hayes has been a solid contributor off the bench this season, averaging 6.4 points and 3.8 rebounds while providing energy behind the starting frontcourt.
The suspension has left fans and analysts scratching their heads. Player-mascot "beefs" are a long-standing tradition in the NBA (Robin Lopez vs. the hoop mascots being the gold standard), but they are almost always scripted bits. For a player to be genuinely suspended for shoving a fuzzy blue creature is unprecedented territory.
Fortunately, sources confirmed that G-Wiz was not injured in the scuffle.
Hayes will be eligible to return to the lineup for the Lakers' next contest. Ironically, despite the bad press, this isn't the last we'll see of him in the spotlight this month, Hayes is still scheduled to compete in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest during All-Star Weekend next week. Hopefully, no mascots get in his way at the rim.
