Kevin Garnett and Minnesota Timberwolves seem ready to finally close a long, unfinished chapter
The Minnesota Timberwolves will finally retire the jersey number that Kevin Garnett wore while he was a member of the team, even though it has been long overdue. The Timberwolves and Garnett have reached an agreement for the former team star to assume a new role, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
As per the reports, the veteran forward will work on content creation, community and fan engagement, and business with the Minnesota Lynx and Timberwolves in the WNBA and NBA. This is because Garnett is a legendary player. In addition to leading the Timberwolves to eight consecutive postseason trips, Garnett was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 2003-04.
Legend Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves is making a long-awaited return to the team that selected him. On social media, the Wolves hinted at Garnett's comeback, stating that "the Big Ticket is back."
Despite the franchise providing very little information regarding his comeback, NBA insider Shams Charania stated that he will join the Wolves and Lynx "in a new, all-encompassing role involving business, community efforts and content development.”
The Wolves will eventually retire Garnett's No. 21 jersey as part of his comeback, according to Charania. Announcing the news, Charania wrote on X:
“Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett is reuniting with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Lynx in a new, all-encompassing role involving business, community efforts and content development, sources told ESPN. His long-awaited No. 21 Wolves jersey retirement will also happen in Minnesota…”
He further said:
“Garnett had been distant from the Wolves organization since his playing career ended in 2016 due to a fallout with Glen Taylor, refusing to have his jersey retired, but built a rapport with new owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez and the sides found common ground on a reunion…”
This is happening due to the new Timberwolves ownership group that is headed by Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez. Garnett no longer had a good relationship with previous team governor Glen Taylor.
Garnett is unquestionably one of the greatest players to have ever played for the Timberwolves. He earned NBA MVP in 2004. He was selected fifth overall by Minnesota in the 1995 NBA draft. Over the following 12 seasons, he became one of the top players, leading the team to eight consecutive postseason trips and the Western Conference Finals in 2004.
During his 10 years with the Wolves, Garnett was voted MVP and made ten All-Star teams. He was traded by the Wolves to the Boston Celtics in 2007, and in his first season there, he won an NBA championship. Now, according to the source, new owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez intend to retire Garnett's jersey at some point during the following two seasons in addition to bringing him back into the fold.
