The Golden State Warriors absorbed a season-altering blow this week. Head coach Steve Kerr spoke publicly for the first time after Jimmy Butler was ruled out for the remainder of the 2025–26 season with a torn ACL. The injury occurred during a win, yet the mood around the team shifted immediately as the news became official.
Golden State had been building momentum, winning 12 of its last 16 games and settling into a steady rhythm on both ends of the floor. Butler’s absence removes a central two-way presence and forces the organization to reassess roles quickly, with Jonathan Kuminga emerging as a key name in the conversation.
Steve Kerr’s Jimmy Butler injury reaction reveals emotional toll
Steve Kerr did not attempt to mask the weight of the moment when addressing reporters before facing Toronto.
"Just disappointed for Jimmy," Kerr said. "He's having a great year. I felt like the last couple of weeks, he's really at the top of his game. So for him and for us, obviously, for him individually, in the middle of a really great season with a lot of possibilities, a lot of excitement with the team, the way we're playing, I just feel terrible for him. He's going to miss the rest of the year.
He added, "It's part of the game, I know, injuries are part of it, but it hurts for sure."
Butler suffered the injury after landing awkwardly against Miami and immediately grabbed his right knee. An MRI later confirmed the torn ACL, ending a season in which he averaged 20.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists while serving as the team’s secondary scorer behind Stephen Curry.
Despite the loss, Kerr emphasized confidence in the roster’s depth.
"I think we're well-equipped with our depth to continue to play at a high level. I like the team," Kerr said.
"We've got depth, so we can keep this thing going. Obviously, we'll miss Jimmy, he's one of the best players in the league, so we can't minimize that."
Warriors rotation with Jonathan Kuminga is back in focus after setback
Butler’s injury has reopened discussion around Jonathan Kuminga, whose season has been marked by uncertainty. Trade eligibility, extended absences, and limited appearances placed his future in question, yet the current situation demands flexibility.
Asked whether Kuminga could rejoin the rotation, Kerr offered clarity.
“He could be, he could be, yeah,” Kerr said. “You know, he obviously hasn't played in a while. But at this point, we have to experiment a little bit with rotations, see where we are. And he's definitely a part of that talk, that conversation.”
Kerr later confirmed that Kuminga wants to play and remain part of the group. ESPN reporter Anthony Slater also shared the same, noting internal discussions about reintroducing him into game action.
“I’ve already been given indications that today they are exploring the idea of restarting the engines, entering Jonathan Kuminga potentially back into the rotation,” Slater said. “And from the Kuminga side, his feelings towards the organization and Steve Kerr have not changed. I’ve also been told that [Kuminga] will be ready if called upon, and I do think we’ll get another chapter of this.”
Golden State sits 25-19, but the team must work on the roster without Butler, as intense battles are waiting in the near future.
