“It’s weird energy”: LeBron James echoes Anthony Edwards’ stance on face of the league debate
LeBron James has made it clear that there is a dark side to being the face of the league, and it may have a huge impact on the athlete. The face of the league debate has been a headline-grabber, with critics and fans jumping into the discussion to share their thoughts on the matter. As younger stars like Anthony Edwards and Victor Wembanyama continue to rise, the question of who will carry the torch from veterans like James has taken center stage. Edwards’ recent comments rejecting that role sparked widespread discussion, which even propelled James himself to address.
Los Angeles Lakers legend LeBron James did not hold anything back while sharing his thoughts on the “face of the league” discussion. During an interview shared by Spectrum SportsNet, James gave his thoughts on why a player like Edwards might be hesitant to embrace such a title.
“Why do you wanna be the face of the league when all the people that cover our game and talk about our game on a day-to-day basis on everybody?” James questioned. “To have that responsibility is weird. It’s weird energy.”
James, who has been the face of the NBA for over a decade, understands the pressures that come with it. He recalled his own journey, saying he never actively sought the title but accepted it as a responsibility to his family, community, and fans worldwide. “I’ve always taken that seriously and understood from the beginning what being a professional was all about and what being a role model meant,” he explained.
The discussion got its direction when Minnesota Timberwolves star power Anthony Edwards made it clear that he had no desire to be labeled the next face of the NBA. “No, not really… That’s what they got Wemby (Victor Wembanyama) for,” he said during a press conference ahead of All-Star Weekend.
In an interview with TNT, Edwards elaborated further: “I’m capable of being that guy. But I don’t want to be that guy, I’ll put it like that. I want to be the guy that just shows up, hoops, kills dudes, and goes home.”
After initially addressing the issue in interviews, James took to X to expand on his thoughts, revealing his stance that the NBA’s culture of criticism makes the role of the league’s “face” undesirable.
“Exactly made my point but anyways. Happy this convo has started,” he wrote. “It ain’t about ‘face of the game’ and it ain't about one person or one show, it’s about the culture of basketball, the most beautiful game in the world.”
He also pointed out that instead of debating about who the league’s face should be, the focus should shift to the game’s excellence: “Steph Curry should be all we are talking about today. Let’s discuss how great OKC and The Cavs have been this season with two completely different styles and break down why and how they have.”
James further clarified that his stance wasn’t about personal criticism but about protecting the game’s integrity. “This ain’t about me either. At this point I don't really care what’s said about me. It’s always something. This is about the impact the negativity is having on our beautiful game and our fans.”

To be fair, James has earned the right to share his comment on the matter as he has secured the elite spot of one of the best in the business, or better, sharing the spotlight with Michael Jordan as two all-time greats.
