As losses pile up and injuries linger, Kyrie Irving’s recovery from a torn ACL has become one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the Dallas Mavericks. He was expected return during midseason, but it has slowly turned into a complicated decision amid the Mavericks' continuous struggle.Dallas entered the year believing patience would be rewarded. Cooper Flagg’s rapid rise has delivered excitement, yet prolonged absences from Irving and Anthony Davis have stalled any momentum. With the Mavericks hovering near the bottom of the Western Conference play in race, every update on Irving now carries a heavier meaning for the short term and beyond.

Jason Kidd gives a major Kyrie Irving return update

The Dallas Mavericks head coach, Jason Kidd, addressed the growing speculation ahead of Dallas’ game against the Golden State Warriors. “Well, there isn’t anything new, I know there’s a lot of speculation going on,” Kidd said.
“But he’s working extremely hard from the rehab… Spending some time with him yesterday, he’s in good spirits, he feels great. At some point, there will be a timeline but right now there is no timeline… Don’t take this out of context, but he wants to get back, he wants to play. But when you’re coming back from an ACL, it’s a time thing… At some point there will be a schedule.”
Kidd acknowledged that a clearer plan could come after the All-Star break, though he avoided linking Irving’s status to the standings. “It has nothing to do with it,” Kidd said. “It's about, for him, mentally and physically, being able to play at the highest level. And in his mind, no one else's.”
Behind the scenes, league reporting paints a more cautious picture. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon wrote, “The return date of Kyrie Irving, the co-star on the Mavs’ 2024-25 NBA Finals team, as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered in early March remains to be determined… sources anticipate that, considering the Mavs’ place in the standings, there will be discussions about postponing his comeback until next season.”

The Dallas Mavericks are in trouble for several reasons

Dallas sits eight games below .500 and remains 12th in the West. Anthony Davis is sidelined with a hand injury, and multiple rotation players continue to cycle through the injury report. Those factors have forced the front office to balance urgency with long-term planning. There was optimism that Irving, Davis, and Flagg could eventually share the floor. That vision now feels uncertain. Irving has never hidden his desire to return. Before the season, he said, “Yeah, I’m right on schedule, guys. There’s consistency here. I’m right on schedule… For me, my advice, the best advice I got is take your time. No timeline is going to be perfect.”For now, the Mavericks remain caught between hope and restraint. However, the team must find balance before play-in chances goes out of hand.
