The NBA All-Star Game 2025 is set to tip off in San Francisco this Sunday, but fans will be missing one of the league’s brightest stars. Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks’ powerhouse forward and this year’s leading All-Star vote-getter, will not be participating due to a lingering calf injury.

Giannis Antetokounmpo has been sidelined since February 2, when the Milwaukee Bucks fell to the Memphis Grizzlies 132-119. He missed the following game against the Oklahoma City Thunder and has been managing a left calf strain ever since. On February 9, the Bucks confirmed he would be out for at least a week, ruling him out of the All-Star Game.

Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers provided clarity on the decision, stating, “We’ve just been monitoring it, and it just hasn’t improved enough for us to play him. If this was a playoff game, would he play? Probably yes. But this is not. And we want to make sure he’s playing in the playoffs.” Rivers added that the team “hopes” Giannis Antetokounmpo will return to full health after the NBA All-Star Game 2025 break.

With Antetokounmpo unavailable, the NBA announced on February 10 that Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young would take his place. This marks Young’s fourth All-Star selection, offering him another chance to showcase his skills on the league’s biggest stage.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s absence is a significant blow to the NBA All-Star Game 2025, as he has been a dominant force this season. In 41 games, he has averaged 31.8 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 5.9 assists. However, his injury could impact his eligibility for end-of-season awards, as the NBA requires players to participate in at least 65 games to qualify. Currently, Antetokounmpo ranks fourth in Basketball Reference’s MVP tracker, but his extended absence may jeopardize his chances.

Fans will not be able to watch the "Greek Freak" play this weekend at the NBA All-Star Game 2025, but his recuperation is still the top priority. In order to ensure that he is prepared for the playoffs, where his presence will be essential to Milwaukee's hopes of winning a title, the Milwaukee Bucks are placing a high priority on his long-term health.
