Is Deng Mayar married? Exploring the young basketball player's family following his untimely demise

Deng Mayar, a young forward, has recently passed away in a drowning accident over the weekend, leaving the University of Nebraska-Omaha in sadness. He drowned in a reservoir in Utah, according to the authorities. As per the Herriman police, the accident took place around 35 yards from shore, where he died at Blackridge Reservoir. It happened as the unmarried basketball star was swimming at the reservoir with a friend.

After receiving a 911 call about two individuals in danger near the reservoir, Herriman police responded. The basketball player’s friend, Sa Mafutaga, managed to reach land before attempting to save his friend once again. However, his efforts were unsuccessful.




Authorities searched the reservoir for several hours before finding Deng Mayar's body. To finish his final rites after the unfortunate event, his family has created a Go Fund Me page.

The Utah player has left behind his six siblings, Angelina, Achol, Christina, Ngor, Achan, and Nyanbol and their loving parents, Alei and Abele. Meanwhile, the description of fund the page reads:

“My brother Deng was an extraordinary son, brother, friend, classmate and teammate. Many of you knew him as Lieutenant Deng, but to us, he was the heart of our family. On August 16, 2025, we lost him far too soon…”

It went on:

“Though our hearts are broken, our love for him will never fade. In honor of Deng’s memory, we are asking for your support so that we may lay him to rest peacefully and lovingly, surrounded by the same warmth and care he always gave to others…”

As of now, it has received $33,374 out of $50,000.

According to the official website of the University of Nebraska Omaha, Deng Mayar started his collegiate basketball career as a long-time starter for Howard Junior College.

After playing for rival North Dakota in the Summit League for two seasons, he joined the Mavericks as a graduate student. He played 15 games over two seasons as a senior, averaging 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds. He began playing for the University of North Dakota in his junior year before transferring to study communications.




His former teammates and coaches, many of whom were devastated by his passing, flooded the athlete with honors after his death. In a statement, Omaha coach Chris Crutchfield claimed that Deng Mayar had made "tremendous progress" throughout the summer.

Paul Sather, the basketball coach at the University of North Dakota, further claimed that the youngster had "a heart the size of a gym" and that his former teammates' hearts were broken.
