Dennis Schroder recently discussed why German fans will always adore Dirk Nowitzki more than him. He went on to state that he feels he will never get the same respect in his country because he happens to be dark-skinned. This wasn’t the first time when the NBA player has talked about facing racism. Last year, before the Paris Olympics, he alleged that he had reportedly faced racism his whole life. Similarly, during a December 2024 interview, he talked about his mental toughness to face racism.

Dennis Schroder talks about dealing with racism almost his whole life

As one of the greatest German basketball players of all time, Dennis Schroder already made history. However, he believes that he will never get the same kind of national adoration from his nation because of his skin color as some of Germany's other all-time greats, such as Dirk Nowitzki. During a recent interview, he said: “When I was 14, I sat in front of the TV watching Dirk Nowitzki carry the flag at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. Back then I thought: how cool, there’s no greater honor. It's a great honor, but for me it will never be the same as for Dirk. I will never receive the same love in this country, because I am dark-skinned.”
Dennis Schroder has already talked about his lifelong battle with racism.
The basketball team captain further broke his silence on how he has encountered racism in his career, days before the Paris Olympics of 2024. Before the event, he said to German outlet Spiegel Sport: "I am attacked because I am black, my wife Ellen because she is with a black man. I don't just see myself in the role of flag bearer because I am black and can therefore make a statement against racism..”

Dennis Schroder has previously explained how facing racism helped build his ‘mental toughness’

His challenging upbringing as a Black guy in Germany has always been a topic of conversation. From overcoming bigotry as a young child to being selected as the flagbearer to represent the same nation where he encountered it, Dennis Schroder's experiences shaped him into the man he is today.

Talking about it, before the Paris Olympic 2024, he said:"My mother is from Gambia and came to Germany as an immigrant. And with all the xenophobia and openly racist slogans on the Internet and on the streets, it is a strong sign that someone like me is allowed to carry the German flag.”Additionally, in December 2024, during an interview, he said:“To be in this league for 12 years, you got to find a way to [have] mental toughness.. You got to come out with effort. You got to play on the defensive end… Growing up in Germany was tough, but it helped me.. I learned a lot..”Dennis Schroder is an amazing player whose negative and positive experiences have shaped his life.
