“I made a mistake”: Paul George breaks silence on suspension, links banned substance to mental health struggle

The 25-game wait is officially over. On Tuesday afternoon, Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George stood before a crowd of reporters at the team's Camden practice facility, breaking his silence on the suspension that sidelined him since late January. With his eligibility restored for tonight’s matchup against the Chicago Bulls, the nine-time All-Star offered a remarkably candid explanation for the "improper medication" that triggered a violation of the NBA’s anti-drug policy.

George didn't hide behind legalese or excuses. Instead, he linked the violation directly to a struggle with his mental health following a grueling recovery from offseason knee surgery.



“To let people down hurt more than kind of anything,” George admitted. He explained that the frustration of his body "not being where it once was" took a significant mental toll. In the course of seeking treatment for those struggles, he made what he described as a "poor decision" by taking a medication that contained a banned substance. “I’ve said it throughout my career, dealing with mental health—I’m no superhero. I’m human and I made a mistake in that moment.”

The "mistake" came with a staggering price tag. Beyond the 25 games of missed chemistry with teammates Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the suspension cost George approximately $11.7 million in forfeited salary.

However, George was quick to highlight a silver lining. He described the forced time away as a "hidden blessing" for his physical state. After a 2024-25 season he previously called "rock bottom" due to nagging injuries, the 35-year-old says he has used the last eight weeks to fully heal his knee and adductors. “I’ve been feeling great, feeling explosive again, feeling strong again,” George told reporters. “I feel like I’m back on that level of being able to perform and be the focal guy.”

The 76ers managed a resilient 13-12 record in George's absence, currently sitting in 7th place in the Eastern Conference. With only 10 games remaining in the regular season, the stakes couldn't be higher. Head coach Nick Nurse has already confirmed that George will have no minutes restrictions or "ramp-up" period starting tonight.

As the Sixers look to claw their way out of the Play-In tournament bubble, they are getting back a version of Paul George that is arguably more refreshed both mentally and physically than he has been in years. For Philly fans, the hope is that this period of accountability leads directly to a deep postseason run.
