LeBron James is confident that Giannis Antetokounmpo would have thrived in the 1970s NBA, but Giannis isn't so sure about that. He acknowledges the compliment but quickly brushes off the comparison, stating that the game has changed too much to make such assessments. With the evolution of rules, training techniques, and playing styles, is it really possible to compare NBA legends from various eras?
Giannis Antetokounmpo believes comparing isn't fair
LeBron James shared his thoughts on the debate surrounding the differences between NBA eras. On "The Pat McAfee Show," he pushed back against the belief that modern players would struggle in earlier times.
He particularly emphasized Giannis Antetokounmpo's remarkable athleticism and talent, mentioning that... "You're trying to tell me Giannis wouldn't be able to play an NBA game in the '70s? Giannis Antetokounmpo would have 250 points in a game in the '70s."
Giannis stressed that it's hard to compare players from different times, as the game has evolved significantly, making those comparisons somewhat unjust. Antetokounmpo remarked, "It's wrong take…probably more 275 I'm joking. Great compliment. But I don't like comparing eras. It's not fair. If I played in the 70s, how everybody practiced & played, we'd play same way…The game evolves".
The back-and-forth between James and Antetokounmpo has sparked fresh debates on whether we can really compare players from different eras. Supporters of these comparisons believe that raw talent is timeless, while opponents point out the major shifts in the game's speed, rules, and physical demands.
The game was quite different back in the 1970s, especially without the three-point line until 1979 and the various defensive approaches used then. Nowadays, thanks to breakthroughs in sports science, players have upped their athletic game significantly.
During a January 2020 Paris event Michael Jordan attempted to explain why direct player comparisons across different eras become challenging. LeBron James is an incredible player according to Jordan yet he acknowledges the issues with comparing different eras of basketball. He remarked that, "I just think we played in different eras... I know it’s a natural tendency to compare eras to eras, and it’s going to continue to happen... But as you can see, our league is starting to expand with very talented players."
