Glen "Big Baby" Davis is officially a free man. After serving his time for his role in the massive NBA healthcare fraud scandal, the former Celtics big man was released on March 13, 2026. While he’s back in the world, his journey through the legal system serves as a wild cautionary tale about what happens when "getting the bag" goes completely sideways.
From NBA champion to federal prison: Glen “Big Baby” Davis released after fraud conviction
The whole situation started back in 2021 when the feds blew the whistle on a scheme that sounded more like a bad movie plot than a professional athlete's retirement plan. Davis was part of a group of over 20 people including 18 former NBA players accused of ripping off the league’s Health and Welfare Benefit Plan.
The hustle was simple but sloppy: players submitted fake invoices for medical and dental work that never actually happened. In Davis’s case, he was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison in May 2024. He was also hit with an $80,000 restitution bill and ordered to undergo supervised release for three years now that he’s out.
What really sank Davis (and most of the others) wasn't just the fake receipts, it was the lazy execution. Prosecutors pointed out several instances where the math just didn't add up. The most famous example? Davis submitted a claim for $27,200 for 15 root canals performed in Beverly Hills on a day when GPS data and social media showed he was actually in Las Vegas. You can’t be in two places at once, especially not when one of those places involves a dentist’s chair and the other involves a sportsbook.
Davis wasn't the only one caught in the net. This was a league-wide embarrassment that saw former players like Terrence Williams (the alleged mastermind) and Will Bynum facing serious time. While some players took plea deals and avoided the heavy hammer, Davis maintained his innocence for a long time before the reality of the evidence set in.
Now that he’s out, the question is what’s next. Davis has always been a big personality from his "Big Baby" persona on the court to his viral social media moments. He’s served his debt to society, paid his fines, and now faces three years of check-ins with a probation officer.
He’s home, but the "Big Baby" brand has a lot of rebuilding to do.
