Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, recently shared some encouraging news about San Antonio Spurs icon Gregg Popovich. After their game, Kerr talked about Popovich's recovery journey, showcasing the strong bond they share, both on the court and beyond.

Steve Kerr developed a significant bond with Gregg Popovich which includes more than just their shared basketball history. Between 1999 and 2003 Kerr played for Gregg Popovich as both players won two NBA titles together while establishing a deep mentoring relationship.
According to Kerr he developed under the guidance of Popovich by saying "He means the world to me." He further expressed, "It's tough to know that he's going through this medical situation. I think about him all the time."Since Popovich experienced a mild stroke on November 2, 2024, Kerr has been regularly reaching out to his ex-coach. He showed his optimism regarding Popovich's recovery, noting, "We continue to communicate, and I know he is doing well." He added that doctors are optimistic, saying, "The doctors are feeling great about all of that."
Since Popovich is unavailable, assistant coach Mitch Johnson has taken over as the acting head coach for the Spurs.
Kerr, who has worked alongside Johnson during their time with Team USA, has spoken highly of his abilities, mentioning, "Mitch is really smart, a great teammate in the coaches' room." He further noted that Popovich holds Johnson in high regard, emphasizing, "I know Pop loves him and feels very strongly about what a good coach he is."Although there are obstacles, both Kerr and Johnson are positive about Popovich making a comeback to coaching. Kerr voiced his faith in Popovich's ability to bounce back, mentioning, "I know he is going to get well." He added, "He's still as sharp as ever."The support for Gregg Popovich has been strong since his stroke.
