Giannis' honeymoon interrupted by paparazzi chaos

Giannis Antetokounmpo's larger-than-life persona contrasts with his private nature. In September, he married long-time girlfriend Marriah Riddlesprigger in Greece, but with the season approaching, his honeymoon was cut short. What should have been a peaceful escape turned into a media frenzy.

On his brother Thanasis' podcast, Giannis revealed he had just one and a half days to relax before photographers began chasing him. “I just got married like three-four days ago and they tried to capture like pictures of me. You know I’m trying to always be polite. I understand what they’re doing and I don’t care you know about the picture which is invasion of privacy for sure but I don’t care,” he said. Despite staying polite, the paparazzi chaos escalated, with a crowd of thousands following him.

The next day, Giannis was shocked to hear reports painting him as rude for not acknowledging the photographers. “The next day my wife came out ‘You won’t believe what they’re saying about you’. I said what? They saying Giannis is a bad kid and he’s not who he really is and he’s not polite and he didn’t even acknowledge the photographer,” he recalled. A brief honeymoon turned into a lesson in how quickly fame can misrepresent you. (Via: EssentiallySports)

I want to be like Tim Duncan. Where the hell is Tim Duncan? I don’t know where he is. I want to be like, ‘oh yes, Giannis’ who remembers … I want to play the game and then forget about me. Don’t talk about me,” the one-time NBA champion mentioned SiriusXM.

In 2020, during a trip to Sweden, Giannis experienced true anonymity. Despite his fame, locals didn’t recognize him, allowing him to walk the streets without interruption. "Nobody knows me here, yeah!” he shouted with joy. "I was eating hot dogs, walking, sitting on the street... it was fun."

For Giannis, that's the life he envisions after basketball, a quiet, peaceful existence away from the spotlight, where he can simply be himself. And once his career ends, don’t expect to see much of the Greek Freak, he’s ready to vanish.
