Former NBA player and champion Kendrick Perkins shared his thoughts on LeBron James’ potential next move. His prediction came after big news about James' longtime business partner, Maverick Carter. According to Bloomberg, Carter is advising a group aiming to launch a global basketball league to rival the NBA.

The proposed league, modeled after Formula 1, plans to raise $5 billion in funding. Perkins believes this development could signal the Lakers legend’s ambition to become a league owner after retiring. While James has been linked to team ownership in the past, this move could be a stepping stone to his ambition.

Following the news of Carter, Perkins took to his X handle to share his thoughts on James’ next move. "I thought yall said Bron was trying to own his NBA team when he retires … sounds like he trying to get his own league," Perkins wrote.

Will James be involved in the new business venture of his long-time friend and business partner who helped the King to reach a stunning fortune outside the court? It is highly unlikely, not anytime soon anyway as the potential league will not entirely align with the NBA and James is yet to announce his retirement.

Will the proposed international league rival the NBA?

A report about a major effort to launch a new international basketball league grabbed attention this week. Bloomberg revealed that a group of investors, advised by Maverick Carter has enlisted UBS and Evercore to raise up to $5 billion. The goal is to establish an international league “to rival the National Basketball Association,” according to Bloomberg.

However, multiple sources told Front Office Sports that the league isn’t aiming to compete with the NBA. Instead, it’s positioning itself as “an F1 for basketball.”

FOS also clarified that James isn’t directly involved, though Carter’s role fuels speculation about his potential future involvement. The league plans to host games in eight cities, spending two weeks in each location. Singapore is among the cities reportedly on the list, taking inspiration from shorter-season formats seen in golf, racing, and women’s basketball.

Although James’ involvement is not confirmed yet, the basketball veteran has previously shown his interest in being a part of a group of team owners in the NBA. "It’s the best fanbase in the world," James said of a potential Las Vegas NBA team. "I would love to bring a team here at some point, that would be amazing. I know Adam is in Abu Dhabi right now, I believe, but he probably sees every single interview and transcript that comes through from NBA players," he added.
