“Fire Nico” debate resurfaces as frustrated PJ Washington gave his candid thoughts on Dallas Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison: “We’re just sick and tired of hearing it”

The Dallas Mavericks are facing one of their toughest stretches of the season. The team has been under mounting criticism after they traded their standout Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. PJ Washington has recently given his honest verdict on the “fire Nico” chant as Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison has been under heavy backlash. It was as intense as fans protesting against the management, especially the GM, and to make matters worse, he received death threats for the same.

The Dallas Mavericks' latest loss to the Philadelphia 76ers extended their losing streak in March, which further raised serious concerns about their playoff hopes. Even with the return of PJ Washington, the team failed to secure a much-needed win.

As per the critics, the Mavericks' struggles came out of the issues of inconsistency on both ends of the floor. Offensively, the team has shown some brilliance, but their defensive lapses have repeatedly cost them games. Washington didn't shy away from addressing the frustration surrounding the team. He acknowledged the ongoing criticism directed at general manager Nico Harrison but made it clear that the players are tired of hearing it.

“At the end of the day, the trades happened, we understand we have a new team now. All that ‘fire Nico’ stuff, we’re just sick and tired of hearing it… We just want to go out and play and the fans to support us,” Washington stated.

Anthony Davis, who joined the Mavericks after Doncic’s trade, suffered an injury in his first game with the Mavericks and has yet to return. Meanwhile, Kyrie Irving tore his ACL in early March, which sidelined him for the rest of the season. The Mavericks have struggled since, going 1-6 since Irving’s injury and dropping from the eighth to the tenth seed in the Western Conference standings.

The frustration reached a boiling point during the loss to the 76ers when a fan repeatedly chanted “Fire Nico” while Washington was at the free-throw line. After being confronted by forward Naji Marshall, the fan persisted, prompting Washington to yell back, “Shut yo a** up” before taking his second free throw.

Mavericks guard Max Christie, one of the players acquired in the Doncic trade, also addressed the backlash. "Definitely not pleasant to hear, but I can't really comment much on that to be honest," Christie said.

"We get paid a lot of money just to play basketball, so for us, we have little things like that that may be distracting and what not -- it shouldn't affect us. We're professionals. We're the best at what we do in this sport. Distractions are gonna be there, and we gotta be able to move forward and move past them and not let those affect us," he added.

The tension is still looming. Doncic’s return to Dallas on April 9 raises further concern for the general manager as he might face further criticism in the upcoming game.
