"Don't like how karma works”: Victor Wembanyama's frustrating night ends with an ugly incident following NBA Finals Game 4 collapse
Victor Wembanyama endured a night to forget as the San Antonio Spurs suffered one of the most painful losses in franchise history. After building a 29-point second-half lead, the Spurs watched the New York Knicks storm back for a stunning 107-106 victory in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
But the drama did not end with the final buzzer. Hours later, Wembanyama became the center of another controversy after an incident involving Knicks fans outside the Spurs' team hotel sparked heated reactions across social media.
For most of Game 4, San Antonio appeared to be in complete control. The Spurs looked set to even the series before New York produced the largest comeback in NBA Finals history. OG Anunoby's last-second tip-in completed the rally and gave the Knicks a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.
Following the defeat, Spurs players returned to their hotel in New York while emotions from the game were still running high. A large group of Knicks fans had gathered outside the hotel entrance waiting for the team bus to arrive.
Videos that quickly spread online showed supporters booing and taunting San Antonio players as they stepped off the bus. The atmosphere intensified when Wembanyama emerged and began walking toward the hotel entrance.
One widely circulated video appeared to show an egg striking the Spurs star as fans shouted from behind security barriers. Additional footage showed objects being thrown in his direction as security personnel escorted players into the building. Wembanyama did not publicly react and continued walking inside as the crowd continued to jeer.
The videos immediately became one of the biggest talking points following New York's dramatic victory.
Many fans condemned the behavior and argued that rivalries should stay inside the arena.
One fan said, “ I mean, he asked for it.”
Another wrote, "As a Knicks fan, I absolutely hate this. I don't like what Wemby is doing on the court. It pisses me off. But the game is settled between the lines. Never take sports anger outside the arena. Whether it is fans or players, win and lose with class, folks."
Another user added, "Man at the end of the day, it's just basketball. Don't ever dehumanise players."
Others saw things differently and pointed to Wembanyama's reputation as one of the series' most polarizing figures. "Wemby dehumanises his fellow players, don't like how karma works then don't do it," one fan posted.
The divided reaction mirrored comments Wembanyama previously made regarding fan conduct during the Finals.
"I didn't know that. My thoughts, of course, is that, I mean, we can't forget it's a game. We're just playing a game out there. And I am all for passion, but with respect for each other. It's unacceptable," Wembanyama told reporters.
Now the Spurs face a much bigger challenge than online criticism. San Antonio trails the NBA Finals 3-1 and must win Game 5 to keep its championship hopes alive. For Wembanyama, what began as a historic collapse on the court quickly turned into an uncomfortable controversy off the court.
