The Dallas Mavericks have been on the receiving end of intense criticism after they traded their star player Luka Doncic in exchange for former Lakers veteran Anthony Davis. As the criticism continued, Dallas Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont finally spoke out on the surprising move. In a recent chat with Dallas Morning News, Dumont backed the team's General manager Nico Harrison for the trade who has also faced huge backlashes from fans.

"It's hard to make tough decisions. But when you want to pursue excellence in an organization, you have to make the tough decisions,” Dumont said.

The 50-year-old businessman added, “In my mind the way teams win is by focus, by having the right character, by having the right culture, and having the right dedication to work as hard as possible to create a championship-winning outcome. And if you’re not doing that, you’re going to lose.”

Dumont stressed that elite talent alone isn’t enough to succeed in the NBA. He pointed to legends like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O’Neal, all of whom built their careers on relentless hard work and their focus on winning. Dumont shared that the Mavericks expect the same dedication, stating that without that drive, a player simply doesn’t belong in Dallas.

“If you look at the greats in the league, the people you and I grew up with — Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Shaq — they worked really hard, every day, with a singular focus to win. And if you don’t have that, it doesn’t work. And if you don’t have that, you shouldn’t be part of the Dallas Mavericks,” he stated.

Dumont continued, “That’s who we want. I’m unwavering on this. The entire organization knows this. This is how I operate outside of basketball. This is the only way to be competitive and win. If you want to take a vacation, don’t do it with us.”

Dumont's stance on the team’s culture was quite firm and it appears that Doncic did not adhere to that during his long tenure in the team. “Look, I think there’s a lot of things that come into play when you decide the roster of the team. And culture is very important. That’s what we’re focused on,” he told the outlet.

Patrick Dumont backs Nico Harrison while acknowledging fans’ emotion

Dumont also acknowledged the emotions of the Mavericks fans as immediate backlash sparked after the trade. Angry and disappointed Mavericks fans took to the streets around Dallas-Fort Worth, voicing their frustration with the team’s leadership. Protesters held up signs reading “Fire Nico” and “Sell the Team,” directing their anger at general manager Nico Harrison and ownership.

“I want you to know I really sympathise with all of our fans who feel hurt. Look, as far as I’m concerned, Luka is a Mav for life, and I really wish him nothing but happiness and success in his career as he continues in LA,” Dumont said addressing the fans.

Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison reportedly received death threats from toxic fans following the trade. Dumont, however, backs the team’s GM with strong support. “I’ve said it all along: In Nico we trust. You have to respect the track record. You have to respect his intellect. You have to respect his relationships and his judgment and his point of view and the way he communicates,” Dumont said.

Dumont further shared that he and his family have been “big Luka fans” calling the 25-year-old an “electrifying player.” He also acknowledged what Doncic had brought to the team during his tenure in the Mavericks.

Regardless, Doncic is now a Laker and he is expected to play his debut game alongside his new team on Monday against the Utah Jazz.
