James Dolan rarely speaks publicly. In his first wide-ranging media appearance since January 2023, the Knicks owner made it clear that recent success has not altered the organization’s long-term goal. Winning matters, but only in one form. Anything short of an NBA championship does not move the needle at Madison Square Garden.Speaking on WFAN’s “The Carton Show,” Dolan addressed the growing conversation around the Knicks’ NBA Cup victory in Las Vegas. The team celebrated the win alongside their fans. However, Dolan reveals that he is looking for the taste of the real thing and that is without a doubt, the NBA Championship.

Knicks owner James Dolan reveals his sights are on the NBA Championship

James Dolan, who has a whopping $2 billion fortune, confirmed the Knicks will raise a banner at Madison Square Garden, but not for the NBA Cup. His words left no room for misinterpretation.“We are going to raise the banner. We’re going to raise the NBA championship banner. That’s the banner we want to raise,” he said on WFAN. “We want an NBA championship, we don’t want some consolation prize.”
The Knicks captured the NBA Cup with a narrow win over the Spurs, a moment Dolan acknowledged as valuable for evaluation rather than celebration.
He described the tournament as a chance to test the team under pressure and measure how it might perform later in the season.“I was very proud of the guys. They did a great job and we’re proud to have the Emirates Cup, but we’re going to hang a championship banner, a real banner.”Dolan also expressed confidence in the current roster, pushing back on speculation about major trades. He praised the locker room dynamic and emphasized continuity.“We love our team. I’ve never seen more copacetic locker room,” he said. “This group could win a championship. I believe it.”

James Dolan reveals why the Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau

Dolan also addressed the decision to part ways with Tom Thibodeau after the team’s deep playoff run. His explanation focused on direction rather than results.“The team is really built on the shoulders of Tom Thibodeau. He built that core,” Dolan said. “But we did come to the conclusion that we had an idea of how we wanted to organize the team.”Dolan explained the shift centered on leadership style and long-term development. Modern NBA success, he noted, depends on collaboration, internal growth, and adaptability.“If you want to build a long-term, competitive, compete for the … you need somebody who's more of a collaborator than Tom was,” he said. Still, Dolan made sure to credit Thibodeau’s impact.“Tom is still a great coach. He should coach again in the NBA.”Dolan’s latest interview has revealed lucid inside details of the franchise that is chasing the Championship. Also Read: Kobe Bryant's wife Vanessa Bryant says friends kept pushing her forward long after Los Angeles Lakers legacy froze time
