Deepak Punia becomes world No. 1, Bajrang loses top rank
NEW DELHI: Silver medallist at the recently concluded World Wrestling Championships, Deepak Punia has jumped to world number one position in the 86kg category but Bajrang Punia has lost his top spot in 65kg in the latest rankings issued by the sport's international federation, United World Wrestling (UWW).
Competing in his maiden senior World Championships, Deepak settled for a silver after an ankle injury forced him to pull out of the final against Iranian great Hasan Yazdani.
The 20-year-old now has 82 points, four more than world champion Yazdani.
This year, Deepak had won a silver medal at Yasar Dogu and bronze medals at the Asian Championships and at Sassari tournament. He has been rewarded for his consistent show.
However, Bajrang, who went into the World Championships as world number one, dropped to number two spot after managing a bronze.

In 57kg, world bronze medallist Ravi Dahiya has entered the top-five bracket. He is ranked No. 5 with 39 points while Rahul Aware's bronze medal has pushed him to world No. 2.
Meanwhile, in women's rankings, Vinesh Phogat, who also won a bronze in Nur Sultan along with the Tokyo Olympics quota, has jumped to No. 2 in 53kg category, gaining four places after her stupendous show last week.
In 50kg, Seema Bisla has dropped a rung to No. 3 while Pooja Dhanda is ranked No. 5 in 59kg, two places behind compatriot Manju Kumari.
