1 gold, 3 silver, 6 bronze! India wrap Asian Wrestling Championship campaign with 10 medals in Amman

The 2025 Senior Asian Wrestling Championship concluded on a high note for the Indian freestyle wrestling team, as they delivered an impressive performance on the final day. Indian wrestlers showcased their strength and determination in the last five weight categories, adding to the country’s medal tally.Among the five categories contested, two Indian wrestlers advanced to the finals, while two others fought for bronze. Udit (61 kg) and Deepak Punia (92 kg) made it to the gold medal bouts, whereas Mukul Dahiya (86 kg) and Dinesh Kumar (125 kg) competed in their respective bronze medal matches.Udit, competing in the 61 kg category, secured his second consecutive silver medal at the Senior Asian Championship. Last year, he had finished as the runner-up in the 57 kg category. His journey to the final was marked by a 9-6 victory over Kyrgyzstan’s Bekbolot Myrzanazar Ullu in the quarterfinals and a hard-fought 2-0 win against China’s Wanhao Zou in the semifinals. In the gold medal bout, he put up a spirited fight but was edged out by Japan’s Takara Suda, 6-4, settling for silver once again.In the 92 kg category, Deepak Punia delivered a solid performance en route to the final. He dominated Kyrgyzstan’s Bekzat Rakhimov with a 12-7 win in the quarterfinals and followed it up with an 8-1 triumph over Japan’s Takashi Ishiguro in the semis. However, he couldn’t overcome Iran’s Amirhossein Biglar, losing 10-0 in the final, securing India’s second silver medal of the day.Dinesh Kumar (125 kg) displayed remarkable resilience in a dramatic bronze medal match against Turkmenistan’s Zyyamuhammet Saparov. Despite a neck-and-neck contest, he secured victory on technical superiority with a 12-12 scoreline, adding a bronze to India’s tally. Meanwhile, Mukul Dahiya (86 kg) put up a valiant effort but narrowly lost his bronze medal match to Japan’s Tatsuya Shirai, 4-2.“The performances of our wrestlers reaffirm India’s growing dominance in Asian wrestling.
