MUMBAI: After nearly a yearlong suspension, Stephen Lee was found guilty of fixing seven fixtures between 2008 and 2009. Among the matches he fixed was a World Championship match. While cueists have faced bans before for match-fixing (Peter Francisco five years and
John Higgins one year), a life ban is almost unheard of.
The accuracy with which Lee fixed results makes the case all the more curious.
Calling the incident unfortunate, India’s first snooker pro Yasin Merchant said: "You can actually predict which frames you are going to lose. But no one can single-handedly predict the frame they are going to win."
Top cueists from the current crop of Indian snooker players, Aditya Mehta and
Pankaj Advani concurred. "I don’t think you can manage to fix exact scores. It doesn’t seem probable or possible. But if somebody wants to do something, there is always a way," said Mehta.
While Advani lamented the incident, he felt the revelation is healthy for the sport.
"It is sad that someone as accomplished as him is associated with something like this. These are isolated incidents . It will secure the future of the game," he said.
